2022 WNBA Finals Game 4 Observations

Image
For each game during the Finals, I will take notes of random things I observed or thought throughout the game and will post it within a couple days of each game.  These are my notes regarding Game 4, which the Aces won 78-71 in an exciting closeout game. This is a special set of observations because I was actually at the game!   My girlfriend surprised me by getting a ticket to the game, which I discovered less than 2 hours before tipoff.   I want to shout her out/thank her for that surprise!   It was an exciting game and was an absolute blast to be there.     1 st Quarter There is absolutely amazing energy in the arena.   The game is sold out and the fans seem to be so excited Connecticut has started this game aggressively offensively for the first few plays, which is a good sign for them Vegas seems to be pressuring the ball a lot on defense.   I’m guessing this is in direct response to Connecticut’s historic offensive performance in ...

2022 WNBA Finals Game 3 Observations

For each game during the Finals, I will take notes of random things I observed or thought throughout the game and will post it either the day of or day after each game.  These are my notes regarding Game 3, which the Sun won 105-76 in a shocking matchup where Connecticut easily won a high scoring game. 1 st Quarter I wonder how A’ja Wilson getting the tough bucket will impact Connecticut to start the game.   It is easy to start to struggle psychologically Now that Wilson has a steal I kind of hope I didn’t just answer my question Connecticut has allowed good shooters to be open from deep on back-to-back plays.   While Vegas went 1-2, that is a horrible way to start the game I really liked that cut by DeWanna Bonner off the Alyssa Thomas pass Even though Connecticut is on a run, I don’t feel that their defense has gotten immensely better; they still have allowed multiple looks that are at least makeable for Vegas I’ve always felt like Wilson was one of the best fini...

2022 WNBA Finals Game 2 Observations

For each game during the Finals, I will take notes of random things I observed or thought throughout the game and will post it either the day of or day after each game.  These are my notes regarding Game 2, which the Aces won 85-71 in a matchup that rapidly descended into a blowout.     1 st Quarter Already it looks like Connecticut is playing like they’re confident and not regretting the loss in Game 1 Kelsey Plum’s drive to the rim was brilliant with the drive since it was totally clear That was a brilliant play by Chelsea Gray with the pass; so pretty DeWanna Bonner’s block at the rim of Kelsey Plum’s fastbreak attempt was a nice defensive play Connecticut has had a couple plays where they made an extra pass, and this style has gotten a perfect look.   That is so important for their offense Brionna Jones had a really smart defensive play where she moved into where Chelsea Gray was going around a defender and didn’t have a good glimpse of the player Jones ...

2022 WNBA Finals Game 1 Observations

For each game during the Finals, I will take notes of random things I observed or thought throughout the game and will post it either the day of or day after each game.  These are my notes regarding Game 1, which the Aces won 67-64 in a matchup that included an exciting second half.     1 st Quarter First play of the game, A’ja Wilson makes an amazing contested basket.   Good start for her I love Natasha Hiedeman’s jab fake; it’s such a smooth play Geez, now Wilson has 2 difficult contested plays; I have no idea how she keeps doing that I think going right at Kiah Stokes was a good play by Alyssa Thomas.   She’s a good defender though not the most elite and can also get into foul trouble It only took 2:15 for a call to be reviewed for a flagrant; I can’t say I would have predicted that if I’m being honest Alyssa Thomas is someone who can be so good at finishing difficult shot, I just don’t get how she’s so good at it Connecticut is struggling to contain...

2022 WNBA Finals Prediction

Note:  This post was originally posted on the Feeling Groupie blog page by mistake; I have moved this over here The WNBA Finals have arrived and somehow the exact series I predicted is occurring, as the 1 seed Las Vegas Aces dominated their way to this point and the Connecticut Sun fought off a couple tough series to make it here.  While I previously gave my prediction prior to the season, I have 25 things I find interesting related to this series, organized by both teams, Las Vegas, and Connecticut. This series might be the perfect analytics matchup, as Connecticut led the way in net rating (+10.2) and Vegas was second (+7.9).    The interesting thing is that while Connecticut is 2 nd  in offensive rating and defensive rating, Vegas topped the league in offensive rating while finishing 6 th  in defensive rating. Vegas played at the fastest pace on offense during the regular season (80.6). Normally it makes sense to slow the game down since Connecticut was ...
